Husband was right! As much as I hoped the boys would not blow my cover, the secret was spilled and I could not tell a lie. Yesterday was a busy “work” day. I dressed appropriately in skinny jeans, a blazer, and my fave wooden heeled platform shoes. Come 3 pm, I picked up my luscious boys and was on “mommy” duty. First stop, Subway to nourish the boys before guitar lessons. We pulled up to JOIN THE BAND (awesome program if your are not familiar ) during rush hour on Oxnard Blvd. As I was getting my son and his heavy electric guitar out of the car (NO, I WAS NOT ON THE PHONE), I toppled over hard. My memory is hazy as I flew backwards. I smacked down first on my tail bone only to be followed by an earth shattering landing on the asphalt with my skull. I saw stars! The pain was overwhelming. Imagine seeing your mother lying on the ground, not moving in the middle of the street, prized sunglasses shattered and thrown- my son was a basket case! I had not seen my 9 year old revert back to an infant screaming for his mommy in years. After the dust had settled, I sat on the curb and prepared myself for the “I told you so” from Husband once he learned that the cause of my accident was something he had predicted many times. I limped into the house last night hoping to cast my shoes aside and lay in bed before Husband came home. Wouldn’t you know it? The dude was home early, lying in bed with a wicked case of the stomach flu. I was caught red handed. The kids couldn’t wait to tell Daddy that mommy’s awesome Marni shoes nearly killed her. It is morning time, the pain pills are wearing off, and I am selecting which pair of flats to wear today.

SNACK MOM

Last week, I was lucky to be snack mom at school. I had worked all week (showing property… yeah yeah, just call me Annette Bening from American Beauty!) and I was tired. It was a free day of sorts where I could hang with the boys at school, lunch with a friend, and get a wax. Days like this don’t come around too often for me. The question was how to dress for the day? Which Nikki was I going to be? On mom days, I love to be comfortable. Comfort for me is NOT a pair of tight jeans but a soft, thin pair of leggings which Husband refers to as the urine trappers. I’m not talking about the costly, promise you a yeast infection leggings from the likes of Lulu Lemon but my faves from Target. You would think at $6 a pair, Husband would be telling me to stock up. Not so! Instead when he catches me wearing the leggings, he demands I change. Not the point of this post though. The point is there are people who always look put together. How abut the girls who fly across the country in tight jeans and high boots. They cruise through airports looking like super models. How do they do it? I spend so much time preaching to my single friends that future husbands can be met at airports, Starbucks, or markets. But, really? How miserable is it to sit in skin tight skinny jeans for 10 hours. I’m itching just thinking about it! But, there are just people who look effortlessly put together for any situation including snack mom. As much as I want to be that girl, I am not. At best, on a non work day when I have the opportunity to be comfortable, I wear a hybrid of comfort clothes with a dash of glamour albeit in big earrings and Glam sunnies. That is good enough for me!

SUPER SHORT TENNIS SKIRTS

Is it lame to wear a tennis skirt and not be a tennis player? The answer is clearly yes- posers are losers. I have always loved the all white “tennis look” which suggests a day of leisure and lemonade. When my friends can’t workout with me because they have a tennis clinic, I get a little jealous. They get to wear those cute tennis skirts and run up and down the court. Actually, the latter doesn’t knock my pom pom socks off. I took lessons as a kid. I was fine. Actually, I had many lessons as a kid and did not excel at anything enough that it became my passion. I could only play piano with one hand, the two hand skill stumped me. I fell at my dance recital even after private tutor dance lessons. Clearly, my parents knew I sucked but did not want me to suffer embarrassment until I too realized dance was not my calling. And, I did get back up and finish the dance number to big applause by my parents. Here’s the good news, I am nearly 40 and I can laugh through a zumba class as I stand in the back, I have a dear friend who was the tennis pro at a prestigious tennis club, and I do have a tennis skirt sitting in my drawer for the day I decide to wear it out with a white Lacoste to “lunch” at someone’s country club.

MY FUTURE

Circa last week, lunch at the Polo Lounge, next booth over was a vision. An older couple lunching was gazing into eachother’s eyes. As I plopped down in their booth, I learned that they have been married 70 plus years. What really got me was the tiara she wore on her head. She was glamorous, happy to be living life still, and in love. Her joie de vivre was infectious. I asked her to tell me her secrets.

Yep, we finally braved the lines (after a failed attempt Friday night) and got the pleasure of eating at Westwood’s new eatery 800 DEGREES PIZZA . OMG! OMG! Let me start by saying I don’t eat Pizza because my ass can’t handle it. Sadly, it has been relegated to the list of foods not to eat. But after reading articles about the new restaurant and it’s Subway like concept, I broke down. Vision of chewy crust, fresh cheese, and a smorgasboard of toppings danced in my mind. Some people calculate their cycle in order to get pregnant. Not I, mc fly! I time my cycle to when I am water bloated enough that a plate of pancakes, a scoop of icing, or a pizza pie won’t further destroy my weight. We arrive at 5:30 sharp at the pleasantly appointed restaurant. Imagine an assembly line where you create a bespoke pizza. You cruise along to a salad section and by the time you reach the cashier, the pizza is finished! It is cooked within seconds in a specially designed oven that heats up to 800 degrees. The coup d’etat was the touch pad massive soda machine, home to 20 soda flavors. The kids went bananas. My sails dipped slightly as they had not yet gotten their liquor license. Wouldn’t a glass of red been a yummy addition to my meal? Leave room for dessert as they have a fresh gelato bar. Salted caramel anyone? Hurry up Mr. 800 degrees, I can think of ten different locations that could really use you.

Kids just say the damndest things. The other day as Husband and I were trying to get 9 year old into our bed for a Saturday morning family cuddle, he made a witty statement that will forever be in our family vocabulary. Several posts back, I described the mattress conflict that Husband and I survived. As we were tugging at our son, fighting for the cuddle, he started hysterically laughing. Seconds later, he declared that Mommy’s side is Heaven and Daddy’s side is Hell. Oh what a smart little boy….
